Over the course of his NFL career, Jarvis Landry has never been shy to make a statement with his footwear.

But now the Cleveland Browns wide receiver is taking his on — and off — field shoe game to another level.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday afternoon, Landry shared a video revealing that he is the newest member of Michael Jordan’s “Jordan Brand.” A subsidiary of Nike — with whom Landry had a previous endorsement deal with — Jordan Brand has been increasing its presence on the football field in recent years via endorsement Stitched Cleveland Browns Jerseys deals with college programs and various NFL players.

Landry’s video announcement features a narration from Jordan himself over the 5-time Pro Bowl wide receiver’s highlights and clips of him working out. It then shows a Jordan Brand-outfitted Landry golfing, spliced with clips of the six-time NBA champion out on the links.

It ends with a custom version of Jordan’s signature “Jumpman” logo. Landry’s new deal will likely see him wear cleated versions of some of Jordan’s signature basketball shoes, including the popular Air Jordan 1 and Air Jordan 11 models.

Other NFL players currently endorsing the Jordan Brand include New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams, Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joe Haden, Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner, New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Appearing in 15 games last season, the 28-year-old Landry totaled 72 receptions for 840 yards and three touchdowns.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – In the 2016 draft, Rashard Higgins was the fourth receiver selected – by the Browns! Here are the other three: Corey Coleman (first round) and fourth rounders Ricardo Louis and Jordan Payton.

In the fifth round with the 172nd pick, the Browns called the name Rashard Higgins from Colorado State. Higgins left that school as its all-time leading receiver. But his lack of speed didn’t impress NFL scouts. Just as it led to only one Division I offer – from Colorado State.

That was despite being a big-time player at Mesquite High near Dallas, catching 69 passes (10 for TDs) as a senior. He also averaged 17 points a game in basketball as a 6-foot, 154-pound guard.

The first time I talked to Higgins was when the rookies reported in 2016.

“What kind of receiver are you?” I asked.

“I’m a catch-the-ball kind of receiver,” he said.

I loved that. It’s so true. He is a catch-the-ball kind of receiver, which happens to be a very important attribute.

I thought of all this when reports came out of Higgins returning the Browns on a one-year, $2.38 million contract. It seemed Higgins would receive a multi-year deal from someone after catching 37 passes for 599 yards and four TDs this season.

But once again, he was passed over.

WHAT HE’S WORTH TO CLEVELAND

Browns fans know his value. He is clutch, with a special chemistry with QB Baker Mayfield.

Football Outsiders said Higgins snared 37 of 38 “catchable passes” last season. No surprise. He’s a “catch-the-ball” kind of receiver. Not big. Not fast. Not especially flashy.

But somehow, he averaged a healthy 16.5 yards per catch.

It’s hard to believe other teams don’t see more value in Higgins, but good for the Browns and their fans. GM Andrew Berry was patient and brought the 26 year old back on a modest deal.

But this could be a big deal for the Browns.

THE ODELL BECKHAM COMEBACK

Early in Game 7 of the 2020 season, Odell Beckham Jr. suffered an ACL injury. Higgins caught six passes that day and 33 passes in his previous nine games. The Browns and Beckham are hopeful for a strong comeback from reconstructive knee surgery.

Perhaps he will. But it’s worth remembering Beckham has missed 42 percent of his games (27-of-64) over the last four seasons because of injuries. The Browns need depth at that position, especially players who are proven. They have Jarvis Landry, Donovan Peoples-Jones and KhaDarel Hodge in addition to Higgins.

That’s the same group of receivers as last season. Peoples-Jones could take a major step forward in 2021 after his promising rookie year of limited duty. The Browns know exactly what they have in Higgins.

Bottom line for today: Higgins is back and I’m happy.

I bet I’m not the only one.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Sunday’s win over the Steelers was an emotional one for any number of Browns players. Joel Bitonio reached the playoffs for the first time in his seven-year career. JC Tretter signed here when the Browns went 0-16. Myles Garrett was drafted prior to the 0-16 year. Baker Mayfield struggled through 2019 and much of the first half of this season before turning his season around and leading this team to the postseason.

It was emotional for Kareem Hunt for a different season. He’s from here. He grew up in Northeast Ohio, playing for Willoughby South High School. He’s talked about the drive into FirstEnergy Stadium to watch games, driving by the whale mural on the side of the Cleveland Public Power building.

“It is definitely a different feeling,” Hunt said on Monday. “Being from here and knowing the struggles in the past that we have been through, I can’t even describe how I feel.”

His family understood the significance of the win, too.

“I have had close family members and friends crying and calling me and a lot of people just sending me pictures of people tearing up and stuff like that,” Hunt said, “because they are just so happy to see us doing well.”

Hunt said he got a call from his cousins and he could see them crying and running around in the living room after the Browns won.

“I could see them all,” he said. “They were just happy and cheering us on.”

Hunt has paired with fellow running back Nick Chubb to reawaken memories Browns fans have of the ’80s teams with Kevin Mack and Earnest Byner and the legendary running backs of the championship years, starting with Jim Brown.

The two combined for 1,908 rushing yards. Chubb leading the way with 1,067 yards on the ground. They were the top two players on the team in yards from scrimmage, Chubb collecting 1,217 yards and Hunt 1,145.

And, for Hunt, he gets to be a part of the revival of his hometown team.

“To be a part of the team and help contribute to taking us to the playoffs is big. It is really a dream come true, especially being from the City of Cleveland.”

The Browns needed two yards to clinch their first playoff berth since 2002. Baker Mayfield headed to the sideline during a Steelers timeout, and he first heard the final play call from his backup, Case Keenum. He thought it was a joke.

Cleveland has the best running back duo in the league with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. But Mayfield thought he’d heard that coach Kevin Stefanski wanted the Browns QB to run for the first down himself.

Sack Monday – Three NFL coaches fired
“I thought he was joking at first because I didn’t hear it from Kevin,” Mayfield told reporters after the game.

But then Stefanski said the play again, and Mayfield heard him this time. The ball would indeed go to Mayfield, who had fumbled three times (losing two) in Week 16, adding to his initial disbelief.

Mayfield took a shotgun snap and took off running to his right behind a convoy of blockers that included Hunt. Needing two yards, Mayfield picked up about four before leaping up on the sideline to emphatically signal first down.

“I was like, ‘You know what, let’s do it,'” Mayfield said. “Whatever it takes. It was a great play call.”

The Steelers chose not to use their final timeout, and Mayfield knelt down once to seal the 24-22 victory that sent Cleveland to its first postseason since 2002. Like that year, the Browns and Pittsburgh meet in the first round of the playoffs.

As it turns out, that carry also gave Mayfield his single-game career-high in rushing yards, as he finished with 44 on the ground. That included a 28-yard first-down run on an earlier drive that culminated in a Cleveland touchdown. Mayfield also threw for 196 yards and a touchdown through the air Sunday.

Mayfield hasn’t been without his critics in his three-season Browns career, but he’s risen to a new level in the second half of the 2020 season, and that was enough to push the Browns to recently unprecedented heights. Despite a Week 16 loss to the Jets jeopardizing Cleveland’s postseason dreams, Mayfield and company had just enough in Week 17 to bounce back. And with the game on the line, Stefanski trusted Mayfield to get the job done.

“He’s tough,” Cleveland’s Myles Garrett told reporters after the game. “I never had a doubt in my mind that he was going to fight for every yard and get that first down. When it was in his hands, I was sure we were going to be all right.”
